GTA VI ‘To Be Set In Vice City’

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Grand Theft Auto VI is reportedly going to be set in two locations, including Vice City.

The next entry in the incredible gaming franchise will be set ‘in or around Miami’ – known as Vice City in the GTA universe – but players will also fly to South America for some of the missions.

According to VG 24/7, GTA VI will feature a female as one of the main leading characters, but there are no more details on whether there will be more than one protagonist as there is in GTA V.

Sadly, the release date may be disappointing for eager fans as it’s expected to be ‚at least three to four years away‘, so you should probably expect it sometime around 2022.

Definitely take rumours with a pinch of salt at this stage, but still, talk is definitely interesting.

Here’s all you need to know:

In the meantime, you can look forward to Red Dead Redemption 2, which Rockstar Games revealed would be released on October 26, 2018.

The sequel has been long overdue since the debut of 2010’s seminal masterpiece, Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

A press release on the Rockstar Games website reads:

We are excited to announce Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released on October 26th 2018. We apologize to everyone disappointed by this delay. While we’d hoped to have the game out sooner, we require a little extra time for polish.

We sincerely thank you for your patience and hope when you get to play the game, you will agree the wait will have been worth it. In the meantime, please check out these screenshots from the game. We look forward to sharing a lot more information with you in the coming weeks.

Red Dead Redemption, which was released in 2010, was a hailed as a pivotal moment for Rockstar as it proved the company didn’t need to rely on the success of GTA to thrive.

While initial impressions would mark Red Dead Redemption as a GTA clone set in the American frontier, the reality was it was much more.

Other than pulling off the usual Wild West outlaw antics like robbing banks, getting into shootouts, crossing the border to Mexico and rigging poker games, Red Dead provided gamers with the full cowboy experience such as herding cattle and breaking wild horses. Micromanaging at its finest.

Its incredible gameplay revolved around one of the most memorable and perhaps tragic, video game characters ever in John Marston, with a story so powerful and an ending so sobering and cathartic, you have to sit back and applaud once the credits finish rolling.

Guess it’s time to wait for Rockstar to make the GTA VI announcement!

  • Science and Tentacles Clash in Twin Stick Shooter Tesla vs Lovecraft

Science and Tentacles Clash in Twin Stick Shooter Tesla vs Lovecraft

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Tesla vs Lovecraft is a rush of a twin-stick shooter, and everyone here at 10tons is abundantly delighted we now have a date for the Xbox One release: March 16! Launching a game is always exciting, but I’d like to take the opportunity to share some of the excitement during development as well.

You might think that after making top-down twin-stick shooters like Crimsonland, Neon Chrome, Jydge, and Time Recoil, we’d have solid routines to just put a plan together and know exactly what our next shooter would be like. While we certainly have plenty of genre expertise, things are rarely as simple as that.

    Tesla vs. Lovecraft Screenshot

Tesla vs Lovecraft started its life more than two years ago. We had finished the colossal project of upgrading our engine to 3D graphics, and the first game to use that capability was Neon Chrome. The idea was to make a simpler arena based twin stick shooter, something roughly along the lines of Crimsonland, but with the new tech. But as we weren’t making a Crimsonland sequel, we needed another theme.

The first concepts and prototypes of Tesla vs Lovecraft were in fact about wizards, even the internal work title was simply Magegame. With a skeleton crew of one developer, we tried all sorts of gameplay mechanics, the most notable one being the ability to teleport a short distance. It ended up in the final game as the Quantum Teleport.

    Tesla vs. Lovecraft Screenshot

Back then it also became apparent that making a great game wasn’t enough any longer, you also need a catchy marketing hook. We searched high and low for something with the right amount of uniqueness to stand out, but also with enough popular culture relevance for people to latch on to. We felt like being onto something by replacing wizards with a bunch of scientist from the golden age of scientific discovery, like Marie Curie, and by having the antagonists be some of the most iconic monsters of roughly the same period, like the Frankenstein’s monster.

Then, as almost a year had passed and the time to start production with a full team loomed, a revelation struck: What if we removed all the other scientists, and made Nikola Tesla the game’s hero. And maybe remove all the other monsters, and just leave H.P. Lovecraft the villain? We could call the game… Tesla vs Lovecraft. Heureka!

    Tesla vs. Lovecraft Screenshot

Not only does Tesla vs Lovecraft sound like a very cool shooter title, it practically paints the boxshot for us: H.P. Lovecraft riding something with lots of tentacles, eyes, and fangs, with Nikola Tesla riding something awesome equal in size, like… A Tesla-Mech? How cool is that! We didn’t have a battle robot mechanic in the game at that time, but we sure had room for another key feature in addition to the teleportation. And what a feature it turned out to be; pretty much every gamer reacts with at least a chuckle, some with maniacal cackle, when they call down the Tesla-Mech for the first time.

With that, we had the elements of Tesla vs Lovecraft in place. Fast forward a year, and the game is now heading for Xbox One. I hope you like it!

Tips and Tricks to Get You Started with Shoppe Keep

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Shoppe Keep has now launched on Xbox One and I hope you’re as excited to open your shoppe as we are to release the game! And if you haven’t heard of Shoppe Keep, it’s a game like no other – instead of playing as an epic fantasy hero, Shoppe Keep puts you in the shoes of an ordinary store owner and tasks you with selling swords, shields and armor.

But before you get going, let me offer some tips and tricks for your start-up business! Shoppe Keep is a game with many layers and great depth, so read on to get a head-start in your Shoppe endeavours.

    Shoppe Keep Screenshot

    Shoppe Approval Rating

Your customers are a smart bunch, and they consider multiple factors when deciding whether to Shoppe with you or not. Customers drag mud into your store and taking on thieves will result in the odd dead body on your front step. Naturally, a dirty and murderous Shoppe is off-putting, and you’ll start to see your Shoppe approval rating decrease, and customers visiting your store less often. So make sure to get your broom out and sweep up!

    Shoppe Keep Screenshot

    Shoppe Upgrades

Each time you sell items or order stock, you will earn K Points. These can then be used to unlock upgrades for your Shoppe, which can be accessed via the Order Scroll. These upgrades are vital to growing your business – here are a few of the most useful upgrades we recommend focusing on!

    • Delivery Portal – Purchase the Delivery Portal for faster stock arrival. Speed will be vital to your Shoppe’s success, especially when your business becomes busier.
    • Entry Fee – You can get particularly greedy if you so wish, by charging your customers a small fee to enter your Shoppe!
    • Rich Customers – There’s only so much customers will take, and if you price your items too highly they will leave your Shoppe empty handed, or even try to steal. Which is exactly why the Rich Customers perk is great, increasing customer price tolerance by 30%.
    • Engineering – This perk is a game changer, as it allows you to purchase Helper Bots – friendly little flying robots that will automatically help to restock shelves and zap thieves.
    • Vinyl Player – All good Shoppes set a friendly atmosphere with background music. The Vinyl Player upgrade allows you to pick and choose your favourite tracks from Shoppe Keep’s original soundtrack, to play at any time while running your store!

    Shoppe Keep Screenshot

    Sir Poshington’s Wonderful Wares

As you probably guessed from his name, Sir Poshington is one for the luxuries in life. You can find Poshington just outside your Keeper’s house, and he will be all too happy to sell you deluxe items. If you want a posh gold-plated armour rack, Sir Poshington is your guy. But his wares aren’t just for looks – they also increase customer price tolerance. Top end items come with top end prices, however, so buying from Sir Poshington is a goal for later in your Shoppe keeping life.

    Shoppe Keep Screenshot

And that’s all for this blog! I could go on, but part of Shoppe Keep’s fun is discovering new ways to make your fantasy business thrive. I hope you enjoy playing the game, and that you find these tips and tricks helpful!

Shoppe Keep is now available digitally on Xbox One, and even has a launch week discount – so why not get it while it’s hot? For all things Shoppe Keep, make sure to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook.

New Preview Alpha 1804 System Update – 3/5/18

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Starting at 6 p.m. PST today, members of the Xbox One Preview Update Alpha ring will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1804.180301-1400). Read on to learn more about a new feature, fixes and known issues in the latest system update.

    New Feature:

    Mixer

    • In this build we are enabling the Mixer – Enable share controller functionality.  This feature will be turned on 9.00am Tuesday March 6th to ensure users have the build.  Users will need to reboot after 9.00am 3/6/18 to use this feature.
    • This will allow a broadcaster from the console to be able to share their controller with a viewer on mixer. They can together play a game where the Synthetic controller created for the mixer viewer is co-piloted to the Hardware controller of the broadcaster.

    Fixes:

    Microsoft Edge

    • This build includes fixes for Microsoft Edge that resolve the missing cursor, blank tabs and performance improvements.

    Store

    • When browsing Add-Ons in the Store, the Show All page will no longer be blank.

    Miscellaneous

    • Miscellaneous fixes and improvements.

    Known Issues:

    System Update

    • This build installation will take a bit longer than usual, as it will require the full update size of 3.5 GB. This update does not factory reset the console it is a large payload. Download times are dependent on your Internet speeds and can likely be improved by using a wired network connection.

    Pins

    • If Microsoft Edge was pinned prior to downloading the 1804 update, attempting to launch Microsoft Edge from the existing pin will fail.
    • Workaround: Delete the old Microsoft Edge pin and re-pin Microsoft Edge.

    Settings

    • When accessing the Language & location page in Settings, it may take a long time for the page to load.

    Pi-Hole

    • Pi-hole users may encounter issues signing in, creating, or recovering accounts upon downloading the 1804 update. This is due to a new configuration file which is downloaded from a URL Pi-hole blocks by default.
    • Workaround: Add clientconfig.passport.net to the Pi-hole allowed IP address list.

    Audio Issues

    • We are aware that some Spatial Audio users will experience unexpected game volumes and are working on a fix.
    • We are aware that the Mono output feature is not working as expected in latest builds. The team has identified a fix and is testing. Please turn off the feature if you are using an audio receiver with less than 7.1 audio channels.
    • We have identified an issue with Dolby Atmos for Home Theater and certain AVR models that will result in random sound cut outs. If a sound cut out ever occurs you can change your audio format settings to something else and then back to reset it.

    Now TV

    • In the Now TV app some UI elements are disappearing during playback.

    Settings – Accessory app

    • Some users may experience a problem not being able to assign controller configurations in the Xbox Accessory app.

    Wi-Fi Lag Issues

    • We are aware of an issue in which your Wi-Fi connection may lag for 3-4 seconds and reoccur after 30 minutes. Workaround: The only known workaround at this point is to use wired networking.

    Blu-Ray Player

    • We are aware of an issue in which the Blu-ray app may experience visual glitching after a few minutes of playback.  Workaround – Quit and restart the application.

    Plex App

    • In the Plex App some users are experiencing buffering.  We are actively investigating this issue.

    Netflix

    • We are investigating an issue in which some users are experiencing the Netflix app crashing.  Workaround – Please check for an update for the Netflix app.

    System

    • We are investigating an issue in which some users are experiencing the console shutdown after you turn it on.  Workaround – Simply turn the console back on.

My Games and Apps – Some Games missing from your collection

    • We are investigating an issue in which some games and apps are missing from your collection.  You may see the tabs in your My Games and Apps show no titles/and or some titles missing in your (1) Game Pass collection and (2) EA Access collection. You still own the titles they are simply not displaying in My Games and Apps .
    • Workaround – Simply find the missing title in the Store and play from the Store display page or launch the EA Access app for other titles missing.

Last week, we announced an exciting playtest for Robocraft Infinity, a game that challenges you to build powerful robots and do battle with them. Alongside the announcement, we included a Q&A where Andy Griffiths, the Communications Manager for Freejam Ltd., issued a call for help from Xbox Insiders to play the game, report any issues and provide feedback. We’re pleased to announce that our community answered his calls, and we’ve got some cool stats that prove it:

    • The playtest was available from Thursday, March 1, at 12 p.m. UTC (4:00 a.m. PST) through Monday, March 5, at 11:59 a.m. UTC (3:59 a.m. PST)
    • 48,000 beta keys were given out via the Xbox Insider Hub during this time
    • 32,690 players took part in the Robocraft Infinity playtest, many of whom played over multiple days
    • 14,302 matches of Team Deathmatch and Battle Arena were completed
    • 4,529 robots were uploaded to the Factory, an in-game community space
    • Saturday saw the most activity, with 18,312 new players trying out the game and servers hitting a peak number of 1,825 users playing concurrently

Not only did Andy and the rest of the team responsible for bringing Robocraft Infinity to the Xbox Insider Program and Xbox One share this exciting data, but they also wanted to thank the Xbox Insider community personally. Here’s what they had to say:

“We’d like to thank every Xbox Insider for taking the time to be a part of this test, and of course, the Xbox Insider Team as well – as an independent developer, we couldn’t have possibly arranged such a big playtest without the help.

We’ve received lots of feedback on the current state of the game via our Official Robocraft Infinity club on Xbox, Twitter (@RobocraftInf) and Facebook.com/RobocraftInfinity. We’ve already managed to hunt down and resolve a handful of bugs, and our diligent team is working on [even] more fixes as you read this.

We will be conducting another playtest on Friday, March 16, through Monday, March 19, so keep an eye on the Xbox Insider Hub during that time if you’ve yet to try our awesome robot-building shooter. Oh, and if you helped us in the previous test, you’re already ready for the next one. Pretty cool, right?

During the next playtest you’ll be free to capture screenshots and video and post them publicly on any social channel of your choice. You’ll even be able to stream the game. Essentially, we want you to spread the word about Robocraft Infinity and your awesome robot creations as far and wide as possible!”

    PlayStation-Related Talks

Throughout GDC there will be PlayStation-related sessions and roundtables focusing on developer topics such as visual arts, audio, design, business & marketing, programming, advocacy, and more. Here are a few sample topics:

The Magic Behind ‘Joshua Bell VR’: Immersive Video with Positional Tracking

Speaker: Ian Bickerstaff (Director of Immersive Video Technology, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe)
    Location: Room 24, North Hall
    Date: Monday, March 19
    Time: 1:20pm – 1:50pm
Pass Type: All Access, VRDC@GDC Add On
    Topic: Entertainment VR/AR
    Format: Session
Synopsis: Many VR videos offer the ability to look around in all directions, but are unable to respond to the subtle changes in the viewer’s position; they only present the view from one single point in space. This presentation tells the story of how the ‘Joshua Bell VR Experience’ was adapted to overcome this limitation for PlayStation VR, creating the illusion of full volumetric video without the complexity normally associated with the technique. It then shows how this technology can now be used to enhance a wide range of other VR content.

    Player Engagement in VR Cinematics

Speaker: Gabor Soos (Cinematic Animation Lead, Sony London Studio)
    Location: Room 3005, West Hall
    Date: Thursday, March 22
    Time: 3:00pm – 3:30pm
Pass Type: All Access, GDC Conference + Summits, GDC Conference
    Topic: Visual Arts
    Format: Session
Synopsis: Cinematic cut-scenes in traditional games can feel disruptive at times, pulling players out of the experience. In the medium of VR, disrupting player engagement can lead to a total break of immersion. On the other hand, distract the audience too much from the narrative and they’ll miss the point of the scene. In this session, Gabor Soos will lead you through PlayStation VR’s production examples on how Sony London Studio attempted to strike a balance between player engagement and cinematic cut-scenes.

  • Tips for Taking on Outbreak, Rainbow Six Siege’s New Co-op Event

Tips for Taking on Outbreak, Rainbow Six Siege’s New Co-op Event

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Outbreak is a special event coming soon to Rainbow Six Siege to challenge your Operators with adversaries unlike anything they’ve seen before. From March 6 to April 3, Siege owners with a PS Plus subscription will be able to play Outbreak for free and take on the deadly extraterrestrial parasite wreaking havoc on the populace of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. A sinister array of enemies will test you at every turn across the expansive new levels, so here are some tips straight from the Rainbow Six developers to help you take them on.

Rainbow Six Siege: OutbreakRainbow Six Siege: Outbreak

    Assemble Your Crew

Outbreak is a co-op event for up to three players, and at the start of each match, you’ll have to choose from a select group of Operators with the weapons and gadgets to give you an edge against your enemies. Having an Operator with the ability to revive down-but-not-out teammates is a big help, so consider running Doc for his Stim Pistol, or Finka, the new Operator from Operation Chimera, for her team-buffing Adrenal Surge. Note that shotguns, while generally relied on for their wall-destroying power in competitive play, are very effective against Outbreak foes. And for those of you looking for a good excuse to put Tachanka’s Mounted LMG into play, Outbreak suits this fan-favorite quite nicely.

    Don’t Summon the Swarm

There are plenty of times in which hordes of enemies will descend upon you in Outbreak, leaving you with no choice but to go loud, but don’t underestimate the value of keeping things quiet when you can. Equipping a suppressor can help you avoid alerting enemies to your presence, and even explosive Breacher foes can be dispatched quietly with a suppressed headshot. The stealthy approach is even more powerful on Pandemic, Outbreak’s harder difficulty setting, where the enemies are more numerous and friendly fire is enabled.

    Rainbow Six Siege: Outbreak

The Who’s Who of Mutated Abominations

There are five unique enemy types in Outbreak, and each will try to lay their own particular brand of hurt on you. Let’s get acquainted.

Grunt: The most numerous foe by far, Grunts swarm you relentlessly once they are alerted to your presence. Headshots are best, though if you wound them in close quarters, you may see a prompt to execute a quick melee takedown. I suggest you follow this prompt.

Breacher: Long spikes and bright yellow bubbles adorn the backs of these nimble enemies who love nothing more than to get near your or your barricades and explode. Shoot them near other enemies for collateral damage, and if they get close to you, melee them before shooting so you don’t become collateral damage yourself.

Rooter: They burrow underground and pop up all over the place, but they want to trap you in one spot with spiked roots? Talk about a dangerous double standard. Shoot them to release their hold on you before the Grunts close in.

Apex: These spooky floating enemies will hit you from afar with blasts of vision-obscuring goop, but the real threat they pose is the faster, tougher enemies they spawn into the battle. Take them out quickly.

Smasher: This hulking beast is all but invulnerable, and more than happy to clobber you through walls or smash through walls in order to clobber you. Create a crossfire with your team so that while one player runs from it, the others can shoot the weak spot on its back. If you’re feeling daring, shoot it in the face to taunt it into charging you, then step aside quickly, wait for it to run into an obstacle and fall to its knees, then melee it in the weak spot for, you guessed it, massive damage.

Rainbow Six Siege: OutbreakRainbow Six Siege: Outbreak

The Best Defense is a Good Defense

As you work your way toward uncovering the mysteries of Outbreak and quelling the carnage, you’ll be ordered to defend some objectives against the advancing throngs. Look around for reinforced walls and deploy them to close off your flanks and limit the amount of angles you have to cover. You’ll still need to keep an eye on them, because Breachers can destroy normal and reinforced walls, as well as barricades; look for the telltale yellow bubbles coming through a wall and try to destroy Breachers before they do their thing. Set up barricades at all doors and windows, but melee a hole in them at head height. This will allow you to headshot Grunts without letting them get too close. And if your objective gets swarmed, remember that smoke grenades will temporarily confuse your enemies and stop their attacks, giving you time to clear them out.

Outbreak is coming to Rainbow Six Siege from March 6 to April 3, and special rewards await PlayStation owners who persevere and conquer its toughest challenges. Take these tips, relay them to your squad, and get ready to take on this nefarious new challenge.

  • The Swords of Ditto Rises to the Challenge April 24 on PS4

The Swords of Ditto Rises to the Challenge April 24 on PS4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The time has come for a new hero to wield the legendary sword and clash with Mormo as The Swords of Ditto arrives on April 24! The team here at onebitbeyond is thrilled to finally announce the release date of our first game as a studio together and couldn’t be more excited to bring it to the PlayStation 4 community first. Some of you might have heard of our new project already or even played it at PlayStation Experience late last year, but we wanted to take some time to dive into the gameplay loop and what makes The Swords of Ditto unlike any other adventure you’ve played before.

The Swords of Ditto is a ‘micro adventure’ which means each individual adventure will be a small, focused experience that has players experience a new version of the world with each run. The land of Ditto has been under siege by the evil Mormo as far as anyone can remember, thriving and crumbling depending on the hero of each era’s success against the forces of darkness. Take down Mormo and the world is a happier, brighter place. Fail and Ditto and its poor citizens descend into a dark, crumbling version of their world.

    The Swords of Ditto

The Swords of DittoThe Swords of Ditto

An adventure begins with a new, randomly designed hero awakening to Mormo’s return and tasked with picking up the legendary sword and tackling a series of challenges to take her down before the three days of dark invasion come to a cataclysmic end. Players can put on a brave face and try to take down the dark queen right away or, most often, will explore the world to gather weapons and items, level up the sword itself, and destroy Mormo’s anchors to weaken her in an effort to topple a hobbled final boss. Discover stickers to perk up your hero and weapons, gather powerful toys to complete your arsenal, and complete side quests to fill your inventory with a variety of useful tools and items.

One of the most compelling features of The Swords of Ditto is that death is not an end but rather a segue to a new chapter and adventure in the sword’s epic story. Once a hero falls a new one will rise 100 years later and wield the same sword as their predecessors, meaning that all the experience and power of the sword from previous runs remain for future adventures. Players will even have a chance to uncover and unlock secret methods to carryover some toys and items, extend the time before facing Mormo, and even resurrect a fallen hero in hopes of a second chance at glory!

    The Swords of Ditto

The Swords of DittoThe Swords of Ditto

The Swords of Ditto is full of many more layers of systems and secrets that will unfold with each new micro adventure, something we hope that players will discover and use to their advantage with every successive run through the world. We can’t wait to share our game with you all and are very thankful for all the love and support from the PlayStation community so far!

Announcing Inside Xbox, Premiering March 10th

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

I’m thrilled to announce that Inside Xbox will debut on March 10th at 12:00PM PST, marking the dawn of a brand-new way for the team to celebrate our news, our games, and our fans.

Inside Xbox is many things. A premier live news broadcast that will highlight breaking announcements and a peek behind the curtain of Team Xbox. A glimpse at the mysteries of game design and a celebration of some of the month’s most exciting games and features. Most of all, it’s an opportunity for us to celebrate and listen to you, the community. All of this will be available streaming in 4K/UHD on supported services and platforms.

You can watch Inside Xbox in all the places you would expect, including Mixer.com/Xbox, YouTube.com/Xbox, Twitch.TV/Xbox, and Facebook.com/Xbox.

For us, Inside Xbox is the next step on a path Team Xbox has been traveling for many years. From programs like feedback.xbox.com to the Xbox Insider Program, and the great work the team has done with Gaming For Everyone, we believe strongly in transparency, inclusion, and having an authentic two-way conversation with our fans. We want to hear from you as much as we want you to hear from us.

Whether you want us to celebrate your clutch 1v4 Chicken Dinner in PUBG, show off your epic treasure haul in Sea of Thieves, ask questions of our interviewees, provide feedback, or just want to sass (politely of course) our friendly hosts, drop us a line using #insidexbox on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. We may highlight your content or commentary from our dedicated community desk on the show, overseen by our good friends Rukari Austin and Alex Hebert.

Of course, we’ll also be unlocking the “free stuff chest” with prizes and giveaways for those that participate in the conversation, including some great MixPot giveaways, so make sure you’ve got your Mixer account all squared away and connected to your Microsoft Account.

Hosting the show will be Xbox luminaries Larry Hryb, Graeme Boyd, Jeff Rubenstein, Alex Hebert, Lydia Ellery, and more.

For our inaugural episode, these fine folks will be crewing a ship bursting at the seams with content. We’ll be sitting down with Rare to discuss the incredible energy from fans surrounding Sea of Thieves, including an illuminating conversation on the core design principle that drives the game, how they’ve acted on feedback from the Closed Beta, and what fans can expect from the game at launch (as well as a tantalizing hint of new adventures to come post-launch).

We’ll be breaking Xbox Game Pass news, debuting upcoming new console features, forging gold (true story), and saying hello to two wonderful old friends (one human, one plastic). You’ll also be able to enjoy a sit-down with Microsoft Studios Executive Producer Nico Bihary to discuss Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, explore what it’s like to bring Far Cry 5’s most polarizing character to life, and much more.

We hope Inside Xbox will become a monthly communal event for us and for you. We hope you’ll be energized by what’s coming, better educated about what’s new, and empowered to better enjoy our favorite pastime with great new features and content.

Welcome back to Inside Xbox, and we’ll see you online on March 10th at 12:00PM PST.

  • Mulaka Review: Of Myth And Monsters

Mulaka Review: Of Myth And Monsters

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Every part of the world has its own history and legends that are ripe for examination, yet games typically stick to a narrow range of familiar cultures. It’s why games like Mulaka stand out; they can open your eyes to concepts and themes that you otherwise might never encounter. Mulaka is a 3D action-adventure game that looks to the Sierra Tarahumara region of northern Mexico and channels its cultural heritage into a fascinating adventure steeped in mythology.

You play the role of the Sukurúame, a spear-wielding warrior shaman who can see both the physical and spirit world, and eventually transform into various animals. From the open desert to a thriving human city, Mulaka’s landscapes have a magical quality that make it feel like an interactive trip inside a children’s book. Your goal in each area is typically to find three magical stones that will unlock a giant door leading to a boss. Bottomless drops, deadly quicksand, water hazards, and precarious climbs are combined in entertaining and challenging ways to keep the action moving and diverse, as are the simple yet enjoyable puzzles throughout.

It can be fascinating to take in as you convene with animal spirits or battle fantastical monsters. The game utilizes its fairly primitive graphics style to give the game a classic look that fits its mythical themes, and the landscapes have a beautiful contoured quality. All the while the soundtrack uses native instruments to create an ambient soundtrack that fits the action, but stays mostly in the background.

    Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

The aforementioned civilization you engage with offers a slightly human touch to the mystical landscape, but Mulaka’s NPCs are disappointing conversationalists. They’re static characters who don’t do much except passively add to the atmosphere. And much like NPCs in classic RPGs, they only have one line of dialogue a piece.

Mulaka’s detailed use of Sierra Tarahumaran mythology is the main here, since it provides a setting we haven’t really seen before. Much like God of War used Greek myths to add compelling, otherworldly drama to its saga, Mulaka’s setting adds a unique flavor to every aspect of the game. The presence of animal spirits leads to a set of monsters that are mostly grounded in the real world, but magnified to menacing proportions.

The themes of animal transformation lend themselves naturally to gaming. So moving from human to bird to bear forms in quick succession later in the game is a fast-paced thrill. Your character’s spirit vision lets you see where objectives and key items (such as keystones) are, in addition to invisible platforms that are required to access specific parts of the world. The magic energy you expend to see these things extends to other abilities, such as flight. The multi-use resource forces you to balance your abilities on the fly, which can be a thrilling challenge during the game’s more intense and chaotic battles.

Combat is near ever-present, and figuring out the best way to deal with the various enemies is part of the fun. Normal enemies, like giant frogs and basic mantis men, can just be wailed on, but many, including a creepy skull-armored spider, are shielded and must first be opened up to attack with a heavy strike. Other enemies are only vulnerable if you can successfully dodge their opening attacks.

Somewhat frustratingly, airborne enemies–from flying bolo-throwing mantises to balls of fire–can be especially hard to hit, especially in the midst of a full-blown battle between several distinct kinds of monsters. The issue stems from controlling your spear, which is especially problematic on Switch. There, the game insists on using motion controls, which don’t behave as accurately as you’d hope. The target lock is also nearly useless, making it incredibly frustrating to hit moving targets, which can be further complicated by the lack of camera inversion settings.

Where things are at their are best are in the terrifically designed and imaginative boss encounters that range from straightforward battles to devious and clever platforming tests. So, in one fight you might be taunting a giant bug to run into towering rock sculptures and another requires you to use the wind generated by the boss itself to fly up to higher points so you can attack the boss’s weak points. Seeing what surprises the next boss offers is one of the great joys of the game.

Mulaka is a simple game at heart with a lot of familiar traits. The open, low-poly landscapes and characters are reminiscent of Journey. The combat and puzzle elements are similar to Breath of the Wild and Okami. But thanks to the specific Tarahumara setting and characters, Mulaka still manages to have a personality and feel all its own. It offers an appealingly unique setting that makes it something more than a typical adventure game.

  • Disney Version Of Cards Against Humanity Rumoured To Be Coming

Disney Version Of Cards Against Humanity Rumoured To Be Coming

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Rumours have resurfaced which are guaranteed to ruin your childhoods.

Cards Against Humanity are said to be releasing a Disney-inspired expansion pack, allowing players to kiss goodbye to the innocence of yesteryear.

Just when you thought the potty-mouthed, dirty-minded guys over at Cards Against Humanity couldn’t go after anything else, it seems they’re coming for your rose-tinted memories of the movies too.

Back in July 2017, a post was uploaded to the company’s Facebook showing a possible mock-up for the Disney-themed cards.

Of course, the alleged mock-up was quickly deleted, but not before one hawk-eyed fan screen-grabbed the evidence for hopeful card gamers to feed off until the news is either confirmed or denied.

…And the content will likely have Walt Disney turning in his cryogenic freezer.

Options include ‘Jayne and Tarzan’s wild jungle sex adventures’, ‘vaginal burns from Lumiere’ and ‘Bambi’s dead mother’.

They certainly are not suitable for children, and seem to have come out of the bottomless pit of evil from whence all Disney villains were spawned, along with the likes of Rasputsin, Gaston, the nasty kid in Toy Story and Scar himself.

You can catch some of Scar’s lowest moments below, if you dare:

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

More answers on the screenshots include ‚Dory the lesbian fish‘, ‚the vibrating toy in Andy’s mum’s bedside table‘ and ‚Quasimodo’s private time with his bells‘.

In case you missed it, Cards Against Humanity, the brainchild of eight friends in their mid-20s which started as a small crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, is the card game which requires you to be a terrible, terrible person.

The friends, who met at school in their hometown of Chicago, Illinois, are named Max Temkin, Josh Dillon, Daniel Dranove, Eli Halpern, Ben Hantoot, David Munk, David Pinsof, and Eliot Weinstein.

The concept of the game is simple – each round, one player asks a question from a black card, and everyone else answers with their funniest white card.

Perhaps this reported Disney edition of Cards Against Humanity – the party game for horrible people – is not one you’ll want to play with your little cousins. Or your gran.

Best stick with the quiet, cushy world of virtual reality gaming instead:

Disney haven’t confirmed any collaboration is on the cards – and the nature of the game is probably dead against their family-friendly branding.

But if you’re desperate, Cards Against Humanity have loads of other pop culture off-shoots to dig your potty-mouthed teeth into.

A box of 460 white and 90 black cards costs around £20 from Amazon, and current expansion packs include a Donald Trump pack, a 90s pack, and a sci-fi pack.

You might’ve guessed, but the creators, who bought part of the Mexican border to stop Trump building a wall, really let rip on the Presidential pack.

There’s also an unofficial Harry Potter Cards Against Muggles pack which fans thought were magic. There are already unofficial Disney ones circulating online too if you can’t wait to have a go!

Someone also stole the concept to create a Deadpool-themed game similar to Cards Against Humanity.

Here’s a little taste of the utter filth the Merc with the Mouth could bring to wordplay:

Great to enjoy over some chimmy changas…

And a bad guy skewer, of course.

  • New Preview Alpha 1804 System Update – 3/3/18

New Preview Alpha 1804 System Update – 3/3/18

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Starting at 6 p.m. PST today, members of the Xbox One Preview Update Alpha ring will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1804.180301-1900). Read on to learn more about fixes and known issues in the latest system update.

    Fixes:

    Black Screens

    • We have fixed this issue when resuming from connected standby (with the console in Instant-On mode) and you encountered a black screen.

    System Update

    • Users will no longer an E200 error at the last stage of the installation or when shutting down some games.

    Netflix

    • If Netflix crashes when first launched, check for an app update on the Store or from My games & apps.  You may need to uninstall Netflix – perform a Hard reboot – aka pull power for 10 seconds and locate Netflix from the Store.

    Settings

    • When accessing the Language & location page in Settings, it may take a long time for the page to load.

    Store

    • When browsing Add-Ons in the Store, the Show All page may appear blank

    Microsoft Edge

    • Microsoft Edge may sometimes fail to show the cursor. Workaround is shutdown Microsoft Edge and relaunch.

Workaround: The only known workaround at this point is to use wired networking

  • City of the Shroud Fuses Tactical RPGs with Fighting Games

City of the Shroud Fuses Tactical RPGs with Fighting Games

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

When we set out to design City of the Shroud‘s combat, we knew we wanted to make 1) a tactical RPG and 2) combine it with the strategic thinking and a sense of split-second action found in fighting games. Simple, right? The end result is a tactical RPG / fighting game-inspired combat system that rewards both patience and think-on-your-feet strategy, allowing for rapid-fire battles in a story-rich world.

So how did we end up with this system? After a lot of iterating (you should see some of the prototypes), we came up with the “Combo Wheel” — a circle of inputs used to activate and chain together special abilities, similar to a fighting game. Think down-right-down to shoot a fireball and you’ve got it; if any of you ever played Legend of Legaia, it’s a similar approach, but in real-time.

Since abilities require specific input sequences to activate them, you can equip abilities that share a starting and ending point for easy combos. For example, if you set a Duelist up with both Dash (up-left) and Roundhouse (left-down-right-up), you can push up-left-down-right-up to activate both skills using only five inputs. This results in the Duelist dashing to her target to slash them with her sword (Dash), then following up with a powerful spinning kick to knock them backwards (Roundhouse).

One reason we settled on putting a big wheel up on screen for these combos is that there are so many abilities and potential combos in the game that remembering them all in real time battles would be a tremendous burden. To make it so you can focus on combat and not have to recall a specific ability’s path, we set up the Combo Wheel to show each equipped ability’s starting input, with the following inputs appearing once you start the sequence. With everything laid out visually, there’s always guidance on how to activate a character’s abilities, so you can think about which ones to use, not how to use them.

So now you have a bunch of abilities and several angry opponents to use them on. Great! Or not, depending on your perspective! How do we manage real-time combat with all these characters and combos on a controller?

Two elements come into play here: the first is that the game rewards patience and strategy. Wait for the opportune moment to strike and victory will surely be yours. Mash buttons and, well, victory will probably not be yours. Finding the right moment to execute a powerful combo is key, and the pacing in combat reflects that.

The other is that we’ve put a lot of time and thought into getting combat to feel good with a controller. You can easily swap between characters, quickly navigate the battlefield, and pop open the Combo Wheel — all with just four buttons.

The Combo Wheel is currently controlled with the left stick: rotating the stick around in a circle is like moving around the wheel and letting it return to center resets your combo inputs. It’s a lot of fun to enter combos this way, and it’s really fast. We’re still iterating, though! We’re thinking about additional options — for example, using the face buttons or directional pad to represent the four inputs on the wheel.

What we’ve created for City of the Shroud: Definitive Edition is a rapid-fire tactical RPG that’s chock-full of action and strategy. Throw in the combo mechanics we’ve adapted, and it’s quite the shift! We’ve worked hard to make the experience as awesome as possible on a controller, and we hope you enjoy the results when City of the Shroud: Definitive Edition launches in 2019 on PS4!
